In September, 270 eighth graders from FVMS embarked on the CORES program by entering the "wilderness", as they called it, with all their worries and fears of the unknown land and its inhabitants. After orientation and a few games to accustom them to the area, students participated in the restoration activities and reflective sessions. In accordance with the NC Common Core Standards, students conducted science experiments aligned with their classroom studies, such as plant surveys.
Personal quiet time for journaling and reflection was a major part of the CORES experience to ensure that each student had opportunities to listen to their own heart and find their core values concerning "the land."
"We must teach children to see the land, to understand what they see, and to enjoy what they understand." - Aldo Leopold
