This poem takes place in a forest in which a girl has found sanctuary in before the industrialization of her town. This piece aims to raise awareness towards deforestation through a personalized point of view experience, personifying Mother Nature herself and her efforts to keep her alive.

I Remember the Forest

I remember the forest.

The scent of oak filling up
The gap of silence left by powerful hands
The essence of Mother Nature herself
She asks us to hush-respect her land.

And I continued

The imprint left by footsteps forgot
The twigs split sideways on soft soil
The church of every fading leaf that fell
Serenely sacrificing to their royal.

And I listened

Her swift, lazy whispers
Floating on a crisp, autumn breeze
Gently caressing cold hearts
Passing through the shivering trees

And I smiled

I knew I had a guardian angel
She surrounded me with loving arms
That stretch from the golden sunlight
To a girl far below, safe from harm.

And I stayed

I sat down, painting a mental picture
I still don't remember how long
I was entertained by the dancing forest
By the sparkling grass and the river's song

Until I had to leave

And I shut my bright eyes
Feeling closer to the earth than ever
As I left I became one with the
Sights, sounds, and weather.

And I panted

A small seed in the center
Of the everlasting, ever-growing
Army of an emerald forest
Contributing without knowing

And years and years later, I visited.

To be faced by a concrete jungle
The remains of a fallen forest army
That raised me to be who I was
Her Creation, now a memory

But then I saw it.

The epicenter of
The land of steel
Presented the one thing
That was real

And I wept.

At the sight
Of a seed that grew
Mother Nature was alive
Watching over it too

And she asked

That I spread my light
My passion, and the trees
To form a whole new forest
One that all could see

I remember the forest.

The scent of oak filling up
The gap of silence left by powerful hands
Mother Nature was there once
She asked us to help-respect her land.
