We would like to recognize one of Ballentine Elementary School's fourth grade teachers, Kathy Wall, for her poem, "Over the Berm." This poem was part of her class' submission.
This Free Verse poem was inspired by a nature experience with an amazing educator at Harris Lake Park. We crept out into a Vernal Pool and collected frog and salamander eggs, and after our observation we carefully returned them.
Over the Berm
I was born in the spring as the rain trickled down from the
tall canopy
of the Long Leaf Pines and budding Dogwoods.
Lucky for me the canopy allowed the sun to peek thru
and awaken my soul.
I was born when the sun, plants, and amphibians
all come together
in a vernal pool of life.
We come together to grow, and change
like the seasons of the year.
I was born to build the cycle of life
metamorphosis, eggs, larva, and adult
all in the damp abundant leaves
of the forest floor
like a tiny community hiding in the trench.
I was born to speak the language
of the Spotted Salamander, the Spring Peeper and the Bullfrog.
If your lucky enough
you can hear our chorus
in the quiet stillness of the woods
like a symphony.
I was born with hopes and dreams
that people would learn, enjoy and appreciate
all that I have to offer,
and protect me.
So, I can contribute to their future.
